Ever since I posted that last blog, I have not been seeing Manny around my side of the playground anymore (or any other side for that matter). I guess his yaya has been diligently coming on time to pick him up. In his wake came a couple of rowdy older elementary school boys who are just way beyond my supervising powers. I mean, their brand of rowdy and disrespect is not beyond tolerance but, I guess, it is just beyond what I am willing to handle on a daily basis. I don't know how others do it, but kids beyond the 1st grade are really just not my cup of tea. I just feel way out of my element around these kids. And, of course, I don't mean to generalize. Some of them are actually quite nice and sensible and, obviously, interactions with those kinds of kids are not bad at all. They're quite great actually. Unfortunately, that is not the norm at this age group. If we just kept the nice sensible kids and chuck out the bastos disrespectful ones, we'd be left with... well, not a whole lot. And besides, we can't chuck out the "bad" kids. I mean, they're not really "bad" afterall. They're just going through some "stuff" at that stage and it's our job to reach out, speak their language and get through to them. And though I fully understand that, I don't think I can ever muster up the patience for that sort of gig... at least, now right now. I'll take a rowdy preschool class any day.
That said, I had another fascinating week in preschool (albeit, somewhat challenging... but that story's for another blog entry). Here are some of the highlights of the week:
The 3D movie experience according to a 4-year-old:
"I watched the movie of Rio and I put glasses and it come to me."
While sitting in the block area, this boy randomly comes up to me and says:
"I am so interesting! I thought of this (referring to the structure they built) all by myself!"
When asked what he wants to be when he grows up:
Kid: I wanna be a teacher! (And as I was tearing up, he changed his mind) No actually, I wanna be a doctor.
Me: Why?
Kid: So I'll help people when they die!
A boy celebrating his birthday that day randomly runs up to me and says:
"It's my birthday today! You have to call me birthday boy!"
When asked what he's going to wear on International Day on Friday, this kid said:
"I'm gonna wear a very posh shirt from Australia!"
Cut to International Day, we spot him wearing an old oversized shirt and brown cargo shorts and boots. Very posh. Very posh indeed!
In contrast to that, another boy was asked what he was gonna wear on International day. He answered:
"I'm gonna wear a smock."
Cut to International Day, we spot him wearing the cutest little tuxedo! That is some smock! Plus, he was acting every bit the respectable prim and proper little man! He would stand up straight with both his hands clasped in front of him. On the swing, he would sit up straight and not swing at all. The little Jose Rizal!
A 4 year old girl telling me about her bad dream:
"I dreamed of a cow that was bad and I was a cat and it died me."
These dreams can make for really scary children's movies!
AND THE BEST STORY OF THE WEEK...
This kid has been wetting his hair and combing it with his hands every after outdoor play for the past few days...
Teacher: Who told you to have your hair this way?
Kid: My brain told me. You know, my brain is here (points to his lower belly)
Teacher: Really?
Kid: Yes.
Teacher: How did you know?
Kid: In Fullybooked, I see a picture where the boy's brain is here (points to lower belly) and the girl's brain is here (points to head).
We all know he meant somewhere else much lower than the belly! HAHA. Later on, I asked him where his heart is. He points to his lower belly again. Think you know what illustration he's talking about? Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
Oh, how the world shapes the minds of these kids!
Love, Oli :)
